Materials & Preparation

- Alligator clips
- Paper clips
- Cardboard
- Aluminum foil
- Binder clips
- Tape
- Craft supplies
Preparation
Set up Makey Makey stations with the bongo or piano app open. Pre-cut cardboard pieces. Provide a variety of conductive and insulating materials.
Build Activity — Step by Step
Paper Clip Push Switch
Bend a paper clip into a V shape and insert into cardboard corrugation. Place another flat paper clip underneath. When you press the V down, the clips touch and close the circuit.
Foil Pressure Pad
Place two pieces of foil on cardboard with a small gap between them. When you press a conductive object across both pieces, the circuit closes.
Binder Clip Toggle
Use a binder clip as a toggle switch — clip it to connect two alligator clips. Remove the clip to open the circuit. This stays on until you toggle it off.
Test Each Switch
Connect each switch to Makey Makey and test with an app. Observe the difference between momentary switches (press and release) and toggle switches (stays on).
Design Challenge
Design a creative switch for a specific purpose — a doorbell, alarm, or game button. Prototype, test, and refine your switch design.
Assessment
Students demonstrate at least two different switch types and explain how each opens and closes a circuit. Evaluate craftsmanship, understanding of switch mechanics, and creativity.
